Photo: @bethjwald/@thephotosociety I am posting some photos this week that I took this time last year while working on several assignments in Chilean and Argentine #Patagonia. I was visiting a friend, Yael Velasquez, on his family rancho near Bahia Murta, #Aysn Province in southern #Chile, from where I took these photos of a storm moving across the Rio #Murta Valley. As the sun broke through the clouds, a #rainbow lit up the #landscape and distant mountain ridges towering above the Murta River. The famous Carretera Austral, or Southern Highway, runs through this beautiful valley - the highway (or Ruta 7) runs 1240 kilometers from Puerto Montt to south of Villa O’Higgins. The ambitious road project was started in 1976 during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet to connect remote communities in southern Chile…now it is a popular tourist route for travelers by car and bike. Ecologically, the Rio Murta Valley is an interesting transition zone between the drier Patagonia steppe to the east and the much wetter coastal forests to the west and is characterized by a broad wetlands surrounded by steep-sided peaks clad with beech forest; other small ranches like the Velasquez' are scattered across the eastern slopes. #southernchile #provinciaaysen #Valleriomurta #andes #carreteraaustral #ruta7 #storm #mountains #wildpatagonia #nikon
