Young Bamar women wash their clothes at the banks of the Irrawaddy River, the largest and most important in Myanmar. In 2007 an agreement was signed to build seven hydroelectric dams. There are great concerns about the ecological impacts on the river's biodiverse ecosystems. Animals potentially impacted include the threatened Irrawaddy dolphin and the Irrawaddy river shark, an endangered species. Also the contamination of the water is likely to affects thousands of families who rely on this river for their livelihood.
