A small population of Kyrgyz live a #nomadic life on the high #plateau of the #Afghan Pamirs, moving seasonally with #herds of yaks, goats, sheep, camels and horses. It is a hard life and many Kyrgyz suffer from poverty, opium addiction and lack of education; some parts of their range is over-grazed and hunted. I took the photo in 2004 for National Geographic while covering a #wildlife survey through the Afghan Pamirs lead by renowned conservation biologist Dr. George Schaller . On this and subsequent trips I also documented life in the Wakhan and the relationship of people with their environment. Starting with Dr. Schaller’s research, the Wildlife Conservation Society continues to work in the Wakhan and has developed on community #conservation and eco-tourism projects the Kyrgyz and Wakhi groups, which have increased economic opportunities for the Kyrgyz while protecting wildlife, including snow leopard and Marco Polo sheep. The photo is from a presentation I will give this week at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles; if anyone is in Los Angeles, I hope you can make it!
