William Edmonson’s 1936 sculpture, “Boxer,“ was likely modeled on legendary prizefighter Joe Louis -- the most dominant athlete of his day, and widely considered the first African-American national hero in popular culture. Edmonson, the son of freed slaves, was the first African-American to have a one-man show at @ニューヨーク近代美術館, one year after he completed this sculpture.
