With all the depressing images of fires and forest destruction I have been covering in 2015, I feel the need to show people that Indonesia has amazing biodiversity that we can still protect. It has not all been lost although a lot of damage has been done. Rhinoceros hornbills (Buceros rhinoceros) are one of eight species of hornbills found in Gunung Palung National Park. I made this photo in 1994 and it was published in my vey first NatGeo magazine article about the strangler figs in the rain forest canopy of Borneo. As Borneo’s forests shrink, the still relatively intact areas like Gunung Palung become more valuable than ever.
