Photo by Kevin Schafer @schaferpho @ナショナルジオグラフィック Continuing my work documenting little-known and endangered species, I have recently been twice to the Mexican island of Cozumel. Separated from the mainland since the Pleistocene, Cozumel is home to a number of animals that have evolved in isolation and are found nowhere else on earth. Case in point: these Cozumel Pygmy Raccoons, here foraging in a dense tangle of mangroves for crabs and invertebrates.
Half the size of their more common cousins, these Pygmy Raccoons are unique to Cozumel, and with no more than 400 of them left, they may be the world’s rarest carnivores. Tourism development has drastically altered the face of Cozumel, reducing the extent of coastal habitat that these raccoons favor, but introduced predators have also been a major threat; Boa Constrictor snakes were once released on the island and now subsist on many of the islands native animals. #Cozumel #raccoons #Mexico #endangeredspecies #mangroves #threatened #endangered #carnivore #procyon
