I spoke to Shia LaBeouf and tried to touch souls: After 173 phonecalls I got through. The automated message played and then a man’s voice said “Can you touch my soul?”. I panicked and scrambled around with my dictaphone. Earlier we’d half joked in the office that I should ask him a question from one of his movies as an “in”. So I fed his character a question from Optimus Prime of Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon. There was an awkward pause and a cough. In unison, the three artists said “thank you” in a kindly, rehearsed tone – and then the line was dead. Instantly I realised I’d made a huge error. What an idiot. Does a man who despises his former blockbuster days, who resents everything that one tired francise represents, want to be placed in that role of Sam Witwicky? I’d failed. I’d already wasted over half a day on the hotline so decided I may as well devote everything to getting another shot. By the 371st phonecall, I was back on the phone and this time I wasn’t going to fuck it up. “Can you touch my soul?” the voice said. “Yes,” I answered with conviction. “I can touch your soul and I’m going to.” “What does connection mean to you? Do you quietly crave it?” A voice I’m 90 per cent sure was Shia’s began to answer, talking about life and closeness and human needs. Great, I thought. This is our moment. I’ve reached out into the void and a hand had met mine, our fingertips grazing. Suddenly, over the top of our blossoming conversation, a singular voice said, “Thank you” in the same tone as before, and it was cut off, just like that. – words @hannahrose #dazedinstastory Read the FULL account now at dazeddigital.com [link in bio] ? @treytylor #TOUCHMYSOUL @thecampaignbook
