Photo by @andywcoleman // As male lions do, this male was off on his own patrolling his territory. We happened to be near the rest of the pride when he called out from a distance. A lion's roar can be heard from up to five miles away, but he was much closer than that. Within a half hour, we could see him enter the area, sniffing and marking his scent along the way.
Remember, all this week, Nat Geo WILD is dedicating programming to nature’s fiercest felines—big cats—creatures of magnificent strength, ferocity and beauty that are rapidly facing extinction. Populations of lions, tigers, cheetahs, leopards, jaguars, and other top felines are declining at an alarming rate. They are victims of habitat loss and degradation as well as conflicts with humans. More than a television event Big Cat Week is an extension of the BigCats Initiative, a long-term commitment by the National Geographic Society to stop poaching, save habitat and sound the call that big steps are needed to save big cats around the world. This global initiative actively supports on-the-ground conservation projects and education to help stem and eventually reverse the rapid disappearance of big cat populations. #bigcats #bigcatweek @natgeocreative
