Bronze whalers are the most abundant sharks during the sardine run that occurs off South Africa’s east coast every June and July. Hundreds of them patrol the margins of baitballs and charge into the seething mass of fish to feed. I was free diving just a few feet away and I am always amazed how remarkably tolerant sharks can be. Imagine running next to a lion with a wide-angle lens, as it is about to bring down a zebra or a wildebeest. That is more or less the equivalent of what I was doing underwater when I created this photograph.
