“The #Scorpions’ career has never exactly gone smoothly. Back in the late Sixties, when Meine and Schenker formed the group, no one had any interest in a German rock band. ‘There was no German rock & roll tradition,’ said Meine. ‘In 1971, we said to our producer that we wanted to play in America. He started laughing. ‘You guys have no chance,’ he said.’ Their chances seemed slimmer when, in 1973, ace guitarist Michael Schenker (Rudolph’s brother) quit to join the English band UFO. ‘We were left with no lead-guitar player,’ said Meine. The Scorpions survived, however, eventually adding guitarist Matthias Jabs and bassist Francis Buchholz. While the Scorpions’ brand of heavy metal was gaining attention in Europe and Japan throughout the late Seventies, the group was all but ignored in America, where albums like ‘Fly to the Rainbow,’ ‘Virgin Killer,’ ‘Love Drive’ and ‘In Trance’ barely dented the U.S. charts. All that changed with the release of ‘Blackout.” Photograph by Chris Walter
