@JayDickmanPhoto On the National Geographic Expedition, “Fiji to Cook Islands: Polynesian Discovery,” we just left Niue, in the South Pacific. Niue is a self-governing nation, the inhabitants are New Zealand citizens. Off the coast of the island, we spent the afternoon snorkeling on a reef that abutted the island. This area is know for the large number of Katuali (Niuean sea Krait) Laticauda Schistorhynchus found in the shallow waters. Though quite venomous, this sea snake is known for being non-aggressive. It was interesting being in the waters with the snakes constantly swimming from the 20-50 foot depth to the surface for air, then returning to the bottom to hunt for food. This image was captured with an Olympus E-M1 with 7-14mm Pro lens, in an Olympus underwater housing. I shot at high enough shutter speed (1/500th of a second) to “freeze most movement. I had watched a few of the snakes as they reacted to our presence by heading back to the bottom with a powerful swish of their tails. @National Geographic Travel @NatGeoCreative @thephotosociety
