In an #indigenous village on the Rio Zamora, in the Cordillera del Condor, #Zamora-Chinchipe Province, a #Shuar man holds a spear that he used in a protest a large-scale, open pit copper mine that is being built a few kilometers from the community. He says he will use it again to protect his family and his territory. After a decade of struggle, the Chinese-owned #Mirador Mine, the first large scale mine in the history of 3Ecuador and a priority project for the Ecuadorean government, is on a fast-track to open, despite continued opposition from Shuar and other indigenous and mestizo communities. The Cordillera del Condor, where the Mirador Mine is being built and many others are proposed, is one of Ecuador’s #biodiversity hotspots, in addition to being the ancestral home of the Shuar.
We have just finished a documentary about mining issues in the Cordillera del Condor. The documentary also presents the cultural and biological riches of the region, and the voices of its people. We will be premiering the film at the Bogotá Film Festival on Oct 22 and 23. http://bogocine.com/
