Photo by: @bethjwald/@thephotosociety | A #Shuar man sits below a #waterfall on the Kumpiamais River, in the Cordillera del Condor, Morona Santiago Province in southeastern #Ecuador. The spectacular and mega-diverse region of the Cordillera del Condor is part of the ancestral territory of the Shuar, once the feared head-hunters of the Amazon and for whom waterfalls are sacred places. “The waterfall is a temple for us,” a Shuar leader told me, and explained that his people use them for purification, for gathering strength, and to connect with the spiritual world. This beautiful spot, and many others throughout the Condor are threatened by many mining projects; the first large-scale metal mine in Ecuador’s history, the #Mirador Copper Mine, is currently being built not far from #Kumpiamais. Several indigenous leaders opposed to the mine have been killed and recent protests led to the arrests of many others. But the Shuar continue to gather strength and sustenance from their rivers, waterfalls and forests, and many continue in peaceful resistance to the development of large-scale mining in the Condor. This photo is part of a series I am posting this week in honor of "Indigenous People's Day" (better known in the US as Colombus Day), to celebrate the diversity, culture and strength of the indigenous peoples of the Americas who have survived 523 years of injustice, racism and brutality brought by colonization (not only Spanish). In other countries of the Americas, the day is known as Dia de la Raza, Dia de la Descolonización, Dia de la Resistencia Indígena. The struggle and the story of First Nations continues from the north of Arctic Circle to the #Amazon and south to Tierra del Fuego. #indigenous #latinamerica #territory #rainforest #tropical #cascada #CordilleradelCondor #mountainsofthecondor #moronasantiago #peace #spirit #calm #nature #oriente #mining #mineria #proyectomirador
