Photo by: @bethjwald/@thephotosociety This photo is part of a series I am posting this week in honor of "Indigenous People's Day" (better known in the US as Colombus Day), to celebrate the diversity, culture and strength of the indigenous peoples of the Americas who have survived 523 years of injustice, racism and brutality brought by colonization. In other countries of the Americas, the day is known as Dia de la Raza, Dia de la Descolonización, Dia de la Resistencia Indígena. The struggle and the story of the First Nations continues, from the north of Arctic Circle to the Amazon and the cold islands of Tierra del Fuego. In the village of #Chinchero, near Cuzco, Peru, Quechua women carry clay pots of local dishes cooked for a communal meal - the women are master weavers and members of the Center for Traditional Textiles of Cuzco, a weaving cooperative that has revived ancient dying, spinning and weaving traditions in throughout the Sacred Valley. The fine weavings produced by the coops have provided the women with a creative livelihood, proudly rooted in their indigenous heritage. Founded in 1996 the Center preserves the knowledge of traditional textiles, weaving and knitting techniques, to encourage the production of these beautiful art works, to support the weaving communities in the Cusco region, and enforce their ancient culture. This photo was taken on assignment for National Geographic Traveler about the renaissance of Incan traditions in Peru.
