After several weeks of trekking through the mountains, the border, an invisible yet unavoidable barrier, looms before him, before all of them. Who are they? Thousands of helpless Afghan refugees, fleeing the horrors of war. On the other slope of this final Afghan mountain, the buses wait, symbols of the comparative salvation of their forced exile to Pakistan, their double-dealing traitorous big brother who has managed to profit from this situation over the last two decades. One can feel the heartbreak of this last glance of this child towards his home. I felt a kinship with him as it reminded me of my last glance of Iran, the morning of March 25, 1981, at 7:35AM.
