Imagine for a moment the deafening sound of an airforce strike launched on a region to annihilate all human life. Night and day, without fail, the threat looms overhead. The village where you had arrived in the morning seems deserted. Then, suddenly, breaking the lull, you hear a group of children reciting the alphabet in song. Not your alphabet, but that of the Kurds. You allow yourself to be guided by their voices, leading you towards the front of the school. You walk into the classroom. You greet the instructor, who is wearing traditional Kurdish dress, and you ask why the school is being kept open while the village is being bombed. You step back. You will forever be haunted by the schoolboy’s gaze and the response of his teacher: “We’ve just entered a long period of war. We know that the Mullahs in power have decided to exterminate our people. Closing our school under the pretext of potential risk would be giving up. No matter the circumstances, we educate our children so that in the future, they can continue our fight for a recognized and free Kurdistan.
