Photo: @rezaphotography // #Rebellion // #Philippines // Benigno Aquino, the most prominent opponent of President Ferdinand Marcos and his 20-year reign of terror, returned from exile in 1983. As he came down the stairs of the aircraft, a military escort shot him in the head. It was a premeditated assassination ordered by the Marcos regime. Pictures of his lifeless body sprawled on the tarmac, his head bathed in blood, traveled around the world. The murder of Aquino, a champion of democracy for the Philippines, marked the beginning of an uprising that would topple the Marcos government. Aquino knew he was destined to die, but no doubt hoped that by sacrificing his life, he could unite his countrymen. Trusted by the people, his widow, Cory Aquino, entered the political fray to carry on her husband’s work. She led the victorious People Power Revolution, symbolized by the color yellow. The sound of chants and marches rang throughout the country as citizens gathered in peaceful protest against the government. On February 22, 1986, three days before the fall of Marcos, the soldiers of a large barracks rebelled against his dictatorship. Pressed behind metal railings, a crowd congregates in watchful support.
