On #NationalCoffeeDay, let’s us not forget the millions displaced #refugees, fellow human beings, living in tents, along sides of roads, in the bushes, dying at sea, on floors, walking carrying their children, all in the desperate act of survival.
I met Am along a roadside at a makeshift refugee camp in Kilis, Turkey last year while working in the @ナショナルジオグラフィック story, Fleeing Terror, Finding Refuge. She and others from her village in Syria had fled due to years of fighting and the recent arrival of ISIS. She had nothing. Literally nothing. One thing she did have was some coffee and a small propane tank. In an act of utter humility, Am offered me a cup. Almost in tears, I sat crosslegged with her on the concrete before her tent, listening to her speak about her homeland, her fears. The utter lack of hope. I reassured her that the world was watching, and that I would do all I can as a fellow human being, as a brother, to share her story to the world.
On this brilliant day of coffee embracing, I share with you Am’s story as she shared with me a cup of delicious coffee, a taste I can still remember. Her smile, equally radiating hope for a better future.
All my best,
John Stanmeyer
