This recently hatched Cape Gannet chick is completely reliant on its parents for shelter from the hot African sun during the day and bitterly cold and damp conditions at night. The parents take turns between guarding and heading out to sea to catch fish to feed the youngster. Gannets can easily travel hundreds of km to find fish but if the shoals of anchovies and sardines are out of range due to overfishing or climatic changes the chick can easily starve to death. This highlights the importance of protecting both seabird nesting and fishing grounds within connecting marine protected areas. #southafrica #seabirds @thephotosociety @ナショナルジオグラフィック @natgeocreative
