GoPro Featured Photographer - @shonbollock About the Shot - Line of Sight: Summer along the central coast provides ample opportunities to capture some insane drone photography because of the coast marine layer. The one sketchy part is that you can lose sight quiet easily in the fog. One summer day my girlfriend @charlottesue and I chose to explore the coastline between Big Sur and San Simeon. On our drive back north I saw this amazing fog bank rolling in and I had to stop and capture some photos. When learning to pilot I only flew line of sight, meaning no FPV or monitor to show you what you are capturing or how far out the quad is. On this flight I actually lost sight of the drone for a second as I was piloting from the beach far off in the center of the frame. After a minor freak out I kept my eyes peeled on the horizon searching for the small speck on the clouds and luckily after about a few seconds, which felt like an hour, I saw my quad making it’s way back towards the beach. Nothing short of wizardry kept that RC connected for that distance but my momentary lapse of sight did result in a pretty epic view. How the Shot was Captured: Since it was an early model quad, I didn’t have a gimbal so I stuck a Floaty with a flat adhesive on the bottom to get to props and skids out of frame. I used my HERO4 Black in TimeLapse Mode at a .5sec interval with ProTune On, ISO 400, auto white balance, and sharpening on Low. PRO TIP: Don’t ever lose sight when flying! Always keep an eye on your quad and be aware of your surroundings just in case you have to escape to the sky or return to base.
