A team of 40 Chinese artists and craftsmen spent a year in Suzhou creating the garden’s components and another six months in Snug Harbor to complete the construction. It was modeled on Ming Dynasty gardens, the most famous of which is the sixteenth-century Garden of the Unsuccessful Politician. The name came from a poem by a bureaucrat who found imperial politics crushing and retired to a life of gardening, writing, “This is the way of ruling for an unsuccessful politician.” To see more views of New York’s hidden gems, visit @newyorkairbook
