photo by @randyolson | words by @neilshea13 — Since I became headmistress I have seen many things I would change but of course the most important concerns education for girls. In rural Kenya this is still not a priority. Many times a family will refuse to send their daughter to school. The father or mother will say No, she must stay home and tend the animals. In other cases, parents will permit a daughter to attend classes for a few years and then, when she is old enough to marry—which is not always very old at all—they will remove her from school and say, Her place is with her husband. It’s hard to argue against this, even for me. These are my people, and tradition is a tree with deep roots. Would you kill it, or try just to trim the branches? You cannot simply say, Education is good, because often, after a girl is educated, she does not want to tend goats anymore. This creates problems for the family: who else will care for the animals or do the cooking? And who wants to marry a girl who won’t cook or tend? The other problem is that there are few alternatives. There is no infrastructure here, no jobs. There is only marriage. Change comes slowly, and it can be very costly. I know because I had to fight so hard for my own education. At every step I had to leave, go further—another town, another school, another training. Eventually I returned, but now I am a widow and I won’t demand the same of my daughters. I will tell them, Go. Learn. Support yourself. Don’t get married too young. I will ask them, What do you need with a man, anyway?
