Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Smoke painting created on the ceiling of a century-old underground by a WWI soldier living here beneath the Western Front. Hundreds of underground cities were created at the beginning of WWI by armies on both sides using large, centuries-old subterranean stone quarries from which the stone to build castles and cathedrals was mined. These spaces were quickly adapted to accommodate large numbers of troops. They were outfitted with electricity, rail, telephones, hospitals, chapels, living quarters, offices, kitchens, and occasionally theaters. They were usually deep enough underground that the powerful artillery shells of the day could not penetrate. When the surface of the earth became inhospitable to life, soldiers on both sides of WWI attempted to recreate a human world and left an abundance of art and inscriptions on the stone walls of these underground sanctuaries. Dozens of these sites still exist under private farmland along the Western Front in France. They now exist in total darkness. This particular underground city was occupied at various times by French, German and American soldiers. Evidence of violent underground combat still exists in this place.
