Photograph by Remi Benali @remibenali. Tanzania, Ngorongoro. This mature bull elephant, one out of 30 roaming the crater floor is lucky. Really lucky to be in a safe haven. Because the Ngorongoro Crater is well protected by the Park Rangers and a Rhino Protection Task Force set by the Frankfurt Zoological Society from Germany, old male elephants can retire here quietly for the remaining years of their life. Unfortunately, according to an article published yesterday in The Guardian newspaper in the UK, Tanzania has lost two-thirds of its herd in the last five years - from 109,051 elephants to 43,330. The difference was slaughtered. Just in the Ruaha National Park alone, 12,000 elephants are literally missing and the government has ordered a recount! Tanzania has now becomes the epicenter of Africa's elephant poaching. Wealthy business people and highly-placed politicians are involved in a sophisticated slaughtering and corruption machine. Tusks have even been seen packed in diplomatic luggages boarding the Chinese Presidential plane during a visit of their Chief of State in March 2013 (source: Environmental Investigation Agency - www.eia-international.org). Zanzibar, an island of Tanzania, seems to have become the infamous hub of this activity. The Chinese need for ivory is insane and they are robbing the planet of our gorgeous giant! (You should know that Instagram is censured in China) Pass this message along, talk with your friends and colleagues at work, get involved somehow! It is said now in Tanzania that the poachers will soon look for the lions teeth and claws. What are you going to do about it? On my side, I am doing a #storytelling about the fascinating Ngorongoro conservation area to inspire you about the beauty of our natural world @remibenali and I will suggest some organizations to support at the end of the story. Honoring all Wilderness in memory of Cecil The Lion. #Tanzania #elephant #nature #beauty #wilderness #saveourwilderness #ripcecilthelion #environmentalinvestigationagency @ifaw @ivoryforelephants @greenpeace @world_wildlife @leonardodicaprio
