Photography by @remibenali. From a month-long #storytelling ending now on my feed. Chinguetti, Mauritania. Abdarahim Ould Beja, the patriarch of the Hamoni family, hands down an ancient hand-written book to his great-grandson, Hassan. Since 1000 years a stunning manuscript collection has been passed from generation to generation. In 2003, a program was set by UNESCO and Mauritania to preserve these books (poetry, religion, astronomy, medicine, history, law). A preservation center in Chinguetti was able to scan around 10% of the family collections. However, it seems that everything has been shut down as Mauritania turns its priority to invest in its security and border protection. I did this story in 1998 and feel it is important to share it on ig now. Why? Because as a French and a Christian, I am tired of my own Western societies stigmatizing day after day the religion of Islam and its believers. It is not appropriate here, on the our collective feed of The Photo Society, to expose more of my personal thoughs so I invite you to know more about it on my feed and to read one of the great stories of the Sahara. @remibenali.
