Fleeing poverty and persecution, many members of the Muslim ethnic group have boarded rickety boats bound for Malaysia, encouraged by human traffickers using high-pressure tactics. For those fleeing, a day’s work in Malaysia can bring three times as much as the 300 taka — about $4 — that undocumented laborers could earn in Bangladesh.
