Hana Daoud Yusef Najar, who was born in 1943, is one of the last three residents in Telskuf, #Iraq, a once-thriving market town of 7,000 that was seized by #ISIS last year. A Nineveh Plain Forces Assyrian #Christian militia unit near the front line helped resettle her to a house near its barracks. She said that last year an ISIS member ripped a crucifix necklace from her neck. When she asked for bread, he said he would rather give her poison. For more than a decade, extremists have targeted Christians and other minorities, who often become stand-ins for the West. This was especially true in Iraq after the U.S. invasion, when Christians began to leave in large numbers and the population shrank from as many as 1.5 million in 2003 to less than 500,000 today. Now, ISIS is looking to eradicate Christians and other minorities altogether. @pvanagtmael took this photo on #nytassignment for #NYTMag.
