It was a long, day of competition at J-Bay today, but a few minutes into the final, something happened that’s never happened before in pro surf history: Mick Fanning, before even catching his first wave, sitting on his board waiting for a set, was attacked by a shark, live and in front of the whole internet. “I jumped away," Mick said on the boat afterwards, clearly shaken up. “It kept coming at my board and I was kicking and screaming — I just saw fins, I was waiting for the teeth to come at me as I was swimming. I punched it in the back.” Renato Hickel, assistant deputy commissioner, quickly announced that the competition is off for the day.
