"Francis laughs, aware that his taste for the disturbing is somewhat theatrical. 'I don’t know if it’s just that I’m a young, fucked-up kid or if it’s that I appreciate the macabre, the strange or the horrible,' he says. 'I got to a lot of movies.' And what about his name, which sounds like that of a mutant matinee idol? 'I’ve always liked sort of funny, corny, pompous stage names, like Iggy Pop and Billy Idol,' he says, 'so I wanted one. My father suggested #BlackFrancis; it’s an old family name.' Even Francis’ voice leans towards the theatrical, straying from controlled pop crooning to howls of adolescent anger. 'I really don't get off on my voice,' Francis says. 'Sometimes I like it, but sometimes it's kind of grating. I guess I'm urgent. I'm just really hyper.
