The @AVMAvets Convention in Boston this week. They are gathering to learn new cutting edge ideas and technology and to have fun. One of their workshops is called “Learning and Profiting with Lasers” and has declawing listed as one of the common procedures that will be taught. How can a veterinarian, who took an oath to heal and help animals, have it in their consciousness to make the choice to hurt, harm, and disable a perfect little cat and do it in the idea of making a profit? Here is one of the many examples of the AVMA’s tried and true,a member for 25 years, this vet proudly touts his laser declaw skills on the front of his website, Aldenvet.com at the Country Village Pet Care Hospital P.C. He says, “Households with young children or ones with leather furniture coverings may also benefit from having declawed cats..” He says, “Cats and kittens of any age can benefit from Laser Declaw.” How is this mindset accepted if the AVMA says declawing should be a “last resort.” Isn’t this misrepresenting the facts? Is this what the AVMA is instilling in their vets since are teaching them all about profit? No mention on how these cats are going to be forever disabled. No mention on how they will have to go through so much pain and suffering (yes laser declawing DOES cause pain and does cause suffering) There’s no mention on how they will most likely ALL these cats will have negative physical and emotional consequences. There’s no mention about a study in 2002 that said lasers offered no benefit over the guillotine blade method. No mention about a study in 1999 that found that complications in a laser declaw were generally worse in the first 2 days after surgery compared to the guillotine blade method. No mention that a lasers burn through the cat’s toe joint & cause 4th degree burns. AVMA veterinarians, please use your lasers for healing procedures only. Please do the right thing and condemn declawing in domestic cats like you did in exotic cats. Angel is not “happy” and surely not “comfortable” after having her toe bones amputated. #stopdeclawing #citythekitty #cooltohaveclaws
