On June 17th, nine people were murdered at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, in a mass shooting that authorities deemed to be a hate crime. Today, the South Carolina Senate voted 37 to 3 to remove the Confederate battle flag from the grounds of the State house. Three weeks ago, removing the flag was viewed as politically impossible.
