Here’s a very sad video that was sent to me that was posted on Instagram of a declawed kitty . Can you imagine amputating a human baby’s toes and watching them walk on them in pain and laughing about it or thinking it’s funny and cute? It’s just such a disconnected mindset to the fact that declawing is inhumane, horrific, and a very unnecessary surgery. Words used by this owner on this video were, “so funny”, “so cute”, “hilarious”. Caption on video, “Life will be hard for the next few days!” Friend, “How old is he? I think I need to get my baby declawed but think he’s too old.” Cat owner, “He’s 5 months old today. He got declawed and neutered.” Friend, “Ok cool, mine’s 4 months. I just was always told you need to do the claws early.” Cat owner, “The vet told me it’s better to do them early but most won’t do them till they’re at least 5-6 months old.” And after I asked her nicely if her veterinarian had informed her of the humane alternatives, she blocked me and said this. “I know plenty of cat owners who have declawed their own cats and those cats are perfectly happy and healthy and as rambunctious as ever.” Please my friends, let all try to educate our friends, family, and coworkers about how terrible declawing is for a kitty and that there are always negative consequences. Cats need their toe bones and claws to lead happy and healthy lives. If veterinarians are going to keep performing this horrific, inhumane, and disabling surgery, then we just have to hope that cat owners will start to get how irrational it is to do such a mutilating surgery on their precious kitties for their convenience and for a piece of furniture. There are always humane alternatives. The rest of the world knows the difference between right and wrong when it comes to amputating toe bones of cats for a normal cat behavior so why can’t all cat people here in North America too?
