Title: Buddies

As the day folds its bright hot wings at Etosha National Park in Namibia, two thirsty young elephants arrive at a desert waterhole. First, they drink plenty of water with great relish, then climb the bank of the artesian pond and march along its edge shoulder to shoulder, their trunks swaying and huge soft feet kicking up silky white dust. They linger, as if savoring the cool of the evening and the rustling of reeds in the pond, while their large extended family is slowly disappearing in the surrounding bush. Similar in age, the elephants are boisterous, companionable and all young male: they jostle, push each other, make up, and then do it again.
Their bodies are strong but their teeth are not: the desert plants of Etosha do not provide the park's resident elephants with enough minerals, and one youngster already broke his tusk. Once they mature sexually, these two will separate and leave their cozy family to wonder off alone, encountering females only during a brief breeding season, or joining a small bachelor band of other males. But right now their life is good and carefree, with plenty of company and the watchful eye of their experienced old matriarch assuring her family's safety. ©Yva Momatiuk
