I’d recently arrived in South Africa and was still rather ignorant of the political scene. During a break in proceedings I approached this chap (Mandela) who, at the time, was unknown to both myself and the world at large. During a five-minute chat, he filled me in on events, not only what was happening at the trial but to the political situation in general, in a most succinct and friendly way. I guess this was the moment that started my serious involvement in South African race relations and the two books that followed.” -Ian Berry
