This woman and child are members of the Chukchi, an indigenous people living in Eastern Siberia. Jimmy Nelson traveled for a month across the ice to document their culture, as part of his project to take portraits of the world's vanishing tribes, but they originally refused to be photographed. “You have to wait,” they said. “You have to wait until you understand us.” Their small community deeply values respect, hospitality and generosity.
