In 1899, Stokes commissioned architect Paul E. Duboy to build the grandest hotel in Manhattan. As writer Saul Bellow put it in his novel Seize the Day, “It looks like a baroque palace from Prague or Munich enlarged a hundred times.... In this photograph, looking south from West 74th Street, Broadway is a surprising green scimitar, slicing through the West Side until it reaches Columbus Circle.
