Photo by @edkashi/ @viiphoto: A 29 year old cane worker that suffers from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKDnT), poses in the cane fields of Chichigalpa, #Nicaragua on Jan. 9, 2013. In the past decade, CKDnT has caused 75% of the deaths of men aged 35-55 in the town of #Chichigalpa, often called the “Island of Widows.” Research on the subject has indicated that repeated dehydration, severe heat, and environmental toxins might play a huge part in the rising death toll among sugarcane workers. Kashi’s project on the #CKDnT epidemic in sugarcane workers is part of a campaign towards raising awareness about this global issue in partnership with organizations like @laislafoundation. This image was featured in the “National Geographic Masters of Photography” course, that was recently on DVD and online. Taught by @ナショナルジオグラフィック photographers, Ed Kashi is included in the roster of instructors for this educational resource.
