Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi/@thephotosociety | Millions of rounds of ammunition were fired during the 1916 battle of Verdun where the number of dead and wounded exceeded 700,000 people. Atop Fort Douaumont, the iron domed observation posts are eerily silent, telling us about a time, not that long ago, when modern mass destruction was born. The scale of violence and killing produced by new high tech weaponry during WWI was utterly beyond human comprehension. Not long before WWI came the birth of the modern city. All the high tech innovations which made life in cities possible: electricity, transportation, telecommunications and media, food distribution systems, reinforced concrete and steel could be deployed in the service of mass destruction. At places like Verdun, the world first learned that modern progress has a dark side. The same technologies that make modern life wonderfully efficient, powerful and exhilarating can utterly destroy civilization on a scale that is impossible to imagine. Like today, the thrill of modern life blinds us to its dangers. Modern societies on both sides of the conflict marched enthusiastically into a meat grinder. No one saw it coming until it was too late.
