When supply of prescription drugs run short on the black market, people who would never have dreamed of shooting up, like suburban moms and middle-class professionals, seek respite from the pain of withdrawal with the more potent method of dissolving and injecting the pills’ contents, or going straight to heroin. This has created a national epidemic, with the CDC linking outbreaks of hepatitis C, for example, to prescription drugs addiction in states such as Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
In Scott County, Ind., sheriff Dan McClain (pictured here) first opposed needle exchanges for these drug addicts until an HIV outbreak threatened to take over the towns he patrols. Now, he’s expanding county programs to treat prescription-drug addicts.
