In Pensacola at the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition, a non-profit research institution, several universities are working together to develop machines that extend and enhance human physical and mental abilities – exoskeletons for the paralyzed is one example. This particular robot, pictured here in a photograph by Marco Grob (follow him on Instagram @marcogrob) for TIME, was designed for rescue operations in disaster areas that might be hazardous to humans, like the ruined Fukushima nuclear reactors in Japan.
