But in a sport with declining participation from Black Americans, the university achieved a notable milestone on Tuesday: It played its first intercollegiate baseball game in six decades. With an assist from Major League Baseball, a doubleheader on Tuesday — which the Xavier Gold Rush split against Bryant & Stratton College — was played at home at the M.L.B.’s Urban Youth Academy at Wesley Barrow Stadium. In 2019, XULA, as the historically Black university is also known, announced that it was resurrecting its long-dormant baseball program, a move that helped attract players who had previously committed to other schools. Adrian Holloway (4th photo), who lost his coaching job at a smaller historically Black university because of funding issues, was hired as head coach. “A lot of HBCUs are either cutting baseball or baseball is terribly underfunded at their university or usually baseball is the stepchild,” he said. “It was definitely a pleasant surprise to see Xavier adding baseball and actually putting money into it. We’re blessed to have a well-funded program to start.” This year, Holloway said, he has a $350,000 scholarship budget, which helped him recruit student-athletes from 12 states.
