President Biden greeted Governor Greg Abbott of Texas after landing on Friday in Houston, an area that has been devastated by recent snowstorms and the coronavirus pandemic.⁣

Abbott joined Biden as they spent the day in Houston, touring areas damaged by the storms, visiting a food bank and speaking at a stadium that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has converted into a coronavirus vaccination site.⁣

In Harris County, which includes Houston, about 50% of 4.9 million residents lost power as the storms hit. Nearly two weeks later, about 10,000 residents are still boiling their water, according to county officials. More than 50,000 across the state still do not have access to safe water, according to FEMA officials.⁣

Across Texas, damage from the storms is extensive and the recovery is expected to be slow. The damage is expected to cost upward of $20 billion, according to the Insurance Council of Texas. Coronavirus vaccinations had all but stalled because of the storm, but are beginning to rebound.⁣

“You’re saving people’s lives,” Biden told a group of officials at an emergency operations center. “As my mother would say, you’re doing God’s work.”⁣
