I'm seeing this reposted a bit. The world can't simultaneously and proportionately acknowledge Akon being "about to" spread Chinese-funded solar energy across Africa and Caitlyn Jenner spreading greater global acceptance of two-spirited people? Jenner's getting more attention now, sure, but if Akon succeeds in providing power to 600 million people, what, no one's going to notice and celebrate that? Really? And why must these things be set in opposition to each other? Ironically, both are development challenges in many parts of Africa: lack of electrical energy is a massive development drag, but also intolerance and dehumanization of LGTB folk is its own type of incumbrance, often with violent consequences. Because I'm marginalized, I'm justified in marginalizing? Nah. More shined light is needed all around. Whether its my dog Snoop or Mike Huckabee spitting, if fear of someone else's gender or sexuality is the call, I'm not hearing it or down with it. Let folks live, so long as they don't harm you. And paranoia about being harmed is not the same as actual harm. Often, it's the repression of marginalized individuals that fuels volatility and social harm. Langston Hughes' "What happens to a dream deferred?" can be asked of all. Does it explode? How does Caitlyn Jenner's freedom of expression limit your own? Or rather, does it enhance it? What's to fear? Tolerance outside your comfort zone? Who said social evolution was about your comfort above someone else's? Who said all this was easy? Stop trippin', man up, live your life and let live.
