A reflection of a Uighur girl and baby inside their building, where there is no running water, in the far western Chinese region of #Xinjiang. @Q. Sakamaki’s project, “China’s Outer Lands,” catalogs marginalized minority groups — people who are rapidly becoming strangers in the territories they call home. As a Japanese photographer based in New York, he has spent almost 30 years as an outsider himself. Now, he has turned to China’s fringe provinces — Xinjiang, Yunnan, Liaoning and others. “ ‘China’s Outer Lands’ is about people instinctively looking for their own identity, between conformity or originality or autonomy or dependence,” he told our photo blog, Lens. “It’s natural, it’s happening in not only China, it’s everywhere.” @Q. Sakamaki’s photos are on display at The Half King in Manhattan until May 24. @reduxpictures
