Photograph by Remi Benali @remibenali. A soul unpleased by its body will leave it and may become a haunting spirit. The Sanitu, represented here by Tuka holding the skull of a cow, are among the most frightening ones. These "unbalanced" creatures, half-men and half-animals, inspire a real terror to the Mentawai to the point that no one leaves the collective house alone after sunset, afraid to cross their path in the darkness of the forest. It was a strange feeling to bath in the evening alone in a stream nearby, at times a bit worried myself by the strange sounds of the jungle...
