Photo by: @hiddenwwi | Carved by a WWI soldier during the war, it is about 8 feet high and watches over the entrance to a French WWI underground city where an abundance of sophisticated sculptures, created a century ago by French WWI soldiers, are found on its stone walls today. The soldier who created this sculpture was an artist in Paris before the war. Photographs from a hundred years ago show this soldier standing on scaffolding carving this beautiful female face, likely inspired by an Egyptian Sphinx.

As an American, it‘s hard to believe that a place like this could remain unprotected and in the raw.
