In #OnKawara's "I Went" series (1968–79), Kawara traced his movements over the course of a day in red ballpoint pen on a photocopy of a local map that he stamped with the date. He eventually preserved the maps in plastic sleeves and assembled them in three-ring binders, filling two binders each year. This series introduces the idea of a studio that is no one place but that takes the form of any room an artist happens to be in.
Tonight at 6:30 pm, artist Emily Jacir and renowned cultural historian Nikos Papastergiadis shed light upon the strategic function of travel, the concept of the studio as an unfixed site, and personal, social, and political identity, all found in Kawara’s work. Tickets at guggenheim.org/calendar
