Happy birthday to Post-Impressionist painter #VincentvanGogh, born this day in 1853. On view now in our collection gallery, see his 1889 "Mountains at Saint-Rémy," painted in the final years of his life while in recovery in the southern French town of Saint-Rémy. Nature had a quasi-religious or transcendental significance for Van Gogh and he felt that painting outdoors would help to restore his health. Unlike the earlier Impressionists, who often painted urban life, Van Gogh advocated painting from nature rather than inventing a motif from the imagination.
