This isn’t any old vest. Installed in back are tiny motors that convert sound and noise into vibrations, allowing deaf people to comprehend words ... through their torso. David Eagleman demoed this “versatile extra-sensory transducer,” or “V.E.S.T.,” at #TED2015. He says, “Your brain doesn’t know, and it doesn’t care, where it gets data from. Whatever information comes in, it just figures out what to do with it.” Following his logic, we could use technology like this to elevate our senses -- or even invent new ones. Why couldn’t we have the echolocation capabilities of a bat, or feel the rise and fall of the stock market in real-time?
