After pulling our sledges in flat terrain more than 40 kilometres, we climbed to higher elevations to enter the realm of the ptarmigans. We were lucky that we reached this point early last week, because 20cm fresh snow came the following day (on the top of hard, icy surface) that would have made difficult to pull the sledges on the steepest parts of the mountain slope (it was a challenge anyway). Conditions were truly winterly during our stay, we measured -27 degrees Celsius in the tent on the coldest morning. We knew we took a big chance visiting the area so early: if ptarmigans did not find food, they would not occupy their breeding territories in late March...
